Progressive retinal atrophy is an inherited eye disease that can be found in many different forms and in many different breeds. In general, this disease leads to progressive destruction of the visual cells in the retina, resulting in loss of vision and even complete blindness. PRA-rcd4 is a form of progressive retinal atrophy that was originally described in the Gordon Setter breed. Over time, however, the causative mutation has also been identified in other breeds. The loss of vision is a gradual process and the first symptoms of the disease usually only appear at an advanced age.
