Glaucoma is a heterogeneous disease that affects the eyes and is characterized by a problem with the drainage of fluid from the eye. This leads to an increase in pressure inside the eye, which can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss. There are two types of glaucoma that affects dogs. One is called primary glaucoma, which is usually inherited, the other is secondary glaucoma, which is acquired due to eye damage. The main clinical symptoms are eye pain, a watery discharge from eyes, lethargy, physical swelling and bulging of the eyeball, loss of appetite, redness in the whites of the eye, decrease appetite, sleeping more than usual squinting or avoiding being touched near the affected eye.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: ADAMTS17 gene

Genetic test: The method used for genetic testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. DNA testing can be done at any age.
