Hereditary canine paroxysmal dyskinesias (cPxD) are a heterogeneous group of recurrent movement disorders differing in duration, frequency and triggers of the episodes. cPxD have been reported in several breeds including Border Terrier, Chinook, English Bulldog, Doberman Pinscher, Scottish Terrier and Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier (SCWT). In SCWT, duration of the episodes ranges from several minutes to up to >4h and frequency ranges from 1 every few days to >10/day with a worsening of the signs with age. Males and females are affected in equal proportion and typically experience rapid flexion and extension of the hind limbs. In some severe episodes front limbs are also affected.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: PIGN gene

Genetic test: The method used for testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. Testing can be done at any age.
