Paroxysmal Exercise-Induced Dyskinesia (PED) - Weimaraner

Paroxysmal exercise – induced dyskinesia (PED) is a type of sudden movement disorder that typically occurs due to stressful situations or excitement. Symptoms of affected dogs may include dystonia, dyskinesia, chorea and ataxia. Affected dogs can also have symptoms of episodic gait abnormalities, muscular tension of all limbs, tremor and reduced mentation. The episodes can lead to collapse, lasting 5-15 minutes and are caused by excitement or exercise. In between the episodes the puppies appear normal. The disease was first identified in Shetland sheepdogs. The tested mutation in TNR gene affects Weimaraner dogs.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Genetic test: The method used for genetic testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. DNA testing can be done at any age.
