Canine neuroaxonal dystrophy (NAD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease of the nerve cells in central and peripheral nervous system. The disease is characterised by dystrophic changes of the neurons that cause axonal swellings. In Rottweiler clinical signs begin at young age and progress mildly. Symptoms include postural deficits, ataxia, hyperthermia, intention tremor and nystagmus. Specific genetic mutation in VPS11 gene has been identified in Rottweilers with NAD.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: VPS11 gene

Genetic test: The method used for testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. Testing can be done at any age.
