Neuroaxonal dystrophy (NAD) is an autosomal-recessive genetic disease in Papillon and some other breeds. NAD is characterized by neurodegenerative pathology of the central and peripheral nervous system in which swellings (spheroids) develop and accumulate along axons throughout the brain and spinal cord. Affected Papillons show various neurological deficits including gait abnormalities, ataxia, tremor, lack of coordination and various behavioural deficits. NAD in Papillon is juvenile-onset as neurological signs start as early as 6 weeks of age.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: PLA2G6 gene

Genetic test: The method used for testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. Testing can be done at any age.
