Hereditary nasal parakeratosis (HNPK) is an inherited autosomal recessive skin disorder. The disease leads to crusts and fissures on the nasal pad of Labrador Retrievers. Nasal lesions are usually first observed between 6 and 12 months of age. In severe cases, painful fissures will appear that can lead to chronic irritation, inflammation and secondary bacterial infections of nasal skin. In some affected dogs a loss of nose pigmentation will occur. Though there is no cure for HNPK, owners of affected dogs can improve the condition of the nose with using topical medications and moisturizing agents.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: SUV39H2 gene

Genetic test: The method used for testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. Testing can be done at any age.
