Glycogen Storage Disease Ia (GSD Ia) - Maltese

Glycogen storage disease la (GSD la) is a canine autosomal recessive disorder known in some dog breeds. It is a severe disorder of glycogen metabolism and is characterized by glycogen accumulation, especially in liver. The symptoms include hepatomegaly, lactic acidosis, seizures, poor body condition, failure to thrive, lethargy, coma and death. The affected puppies often have to be euthanised due to severe symptoms.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: G6PC gene

Genetic test: The method used for genetic testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. DNA testing can be done at any age.
