Foetal onset neuroaxonal dystrophy (FNAD) is a fatal autosomal recessive dystrophy of the central and/or peripheral nervous system. It is characterized by early onset signs, that affect foetal development. At birth, affected puppies exhibit stereotypical positioning of limbs, scoliosis, arthrogryposis, pulmonary hypoplasia, and respiratory failure. Regional hypoplasia in the central nervous system (underdeveloped cerebellum, spinal cord) is also observed. Affected puppies die at birth due to respiratory failure.

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

Mutation: MFN2 gene

Genetic test: The method used for genetic testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. DNA testing can be done at any age.
